Nine families whose homes were destroyed by fire this year in Labasa were presented $500 each by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee.

The money was from the festival proceeds.

Festival committee president Rajesh Rishiram, during the festival’s thanksgiving night at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa last Saturday, said the committee existed for the people of the North.

“Our commitment is not just lip service,” Mr Rishiram said.

“We know that these families have special needs and such timely donation would be helpful to them.

“We raised $250,000 which is more than what we expected. This would be wisely used in various community projects.”

Commissioner Northern Joseva Vocea thanked the committee for assisting the families.

“Such a service is needed and we thank them on behalf of Government,” Mr Vocea said.

“The festival, over the years, have been improving and growing in terms of entertainment, amusements and service.”

Miss Friendly North prepares for pageant

Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Fugawai Bulivou has started preparations for the Miss Fiji Pageant.

“This is the first time a queen from the North will participate in the Miss Fiji Pageant. It is a great honour and privilege,” Miss Bulivou said.

“This platform would be very challenging. I have all the talents of a woman and I would work on various areas to win and make the Northern Division proud.

“I have been advocating on risk factors of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and I would continue to raise awareness on this.

“There are 1221 NCD cases in the Northern Division. It is very alarming.”

The 23-year-old is originally from Yadrana Village in Lakeba, Lau. She is a physiotherapist at Labasa Hospital.
