Two hundred (200) volunteers will be part of the 2015 Fijian International which tees off at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course on Thursday.

Tournament chief marshall Norm Emerson said 35 volunteers flew over from Australia and New Zealand.

Emerson added only a handful of locals who were part of the event last year made it this year.

“It was a great success last year because there was a good lot. But most of the Fijians did not know much about golf but we enjoyed educating them and they are terrific people, it was a lot of fun.”

“A lot of villagers are coming for training on what to do; now we wait for the tournament to begin. Meeting the people is lovely to get on with. I am just enjoying organising the volunteers,” he said.

Emerson has been involved in 50 big tournaments in the past.

“I’ve been involved in Masters tournaments in Australia, as all the major tournaments in Victoria and Melbourne with the Heineken Classic and Australia Open, World Cup, and the President Cup.”

His wife Judy is working with the walking scorers.

Meanwhile, Eta Marama, 18, a volunteer from neighbouring Sanasana village, Nadroga said it was her first time to be part of the event.

“I have heard a lot about it from my relatives last year and thought to be part of the success,” she said.

“This is a major sport in the country.”

Semi Kolikata, 17 said he loved to be part of the event.

“This is a time for me where I could see some top golfers who play for money and it is an interesting sport as we ll.”

The event tees off on Thursday and ends on Sunday.
