At 21 years of age Zaira Begg has already entered four local beauty pageants.

Now she is one of the top ten finalists that will be training in Nadi this week for the Miss Fiji Pageant.

She was brought up in Sorokoba Village in Ba and received her education at Varavu Muslim Primary School and Khalsa College in Ba.

“I had a very strict upbringing and because of the conservative surroundings that I was in; I was not allowed to enter pageants like this on my own will,” she said.

Her parents are sugar cane farmers and she is the eldest of three siblings.

“I was in Year 13 when I wanted to participate in the Miss World Fiji pageant but because my parents were strict, I was not allowed to and from then on I was inspired to be independent and was motivated to live an independent life,” she said.

“I have always wanted to learn more and explore new things and to live freely so I came to Suva and that’s when I decided to participate in 2012 and I was one of the lucky participants,” she said.

“I have made my parents happy and they now know that they can trust me for I value the moral values they have instilled in me,” she said.

“My message for this year’s pageant is on domestic violence where I will try and encourage men who are well informed on this issue to help educate other men on the importance of women in the society,” she said.

Miss Begg plans to further her studies in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry in the future.
