Police Corporals Warned

Your biggest challenge throughout this course will be your own attitude, says Commissioner of Police Ben Groenewald while opening the Corporal’s Qualifying Course at the Fiji Police Academy in Nasova yesterday.

The Police Chief said having the right attitude to serve diligently as a Police officer, continued to be, in his view, the major contributor to the number of complaints received about service delivery.

“I am constantly receiving complaints about our service delivery and the complainants are from very senior members of Government to the general public,” Mr Groenewald said.

“This is because some officers are not interested in doing their jobs properly, and all of you at the front line of duty have a responsibility to ensure the right things are being done.”

He said the number of complaints received was a reflection of the lack of command and control.

“You’re appointed as first-level command and control, but if you refuse to do your jobs properly and continue to ignore and misuse authority, there is no way that your senior officers can fight for you in terms of getting better compensation and resources,” he said.

“I do not shy away from taking responsibility when complaints are raised about service delivery, but you need to stop ignoring these issues, and the sooner we accept the responsibility we all have towards the discipline and professionalism of the Fiji Police the better.”

He also reminded the course participants of the newly-introduced directive regarding social activities.

“This is not an idle warning, whilst you’re here, and if we catch you taking alcohol or kava, we will take steps.

“So I challenge you, the opportunity is in your hands, the responsibility is yours, the challenges will be there, and it is up to you to overcome those obstacles.”

The course will run for one month.
