Director Public Prosecutions Reviews File On Commissioner
Commissioner of Police Bernadus Groenewald.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has confirmed receiving the investigation file against Police Commissioner, Ben Groenewald.

This relates to a complaint made against the Commissioner following his alleged involvement in the release of the 59-year-old South African diplomat who was involved in a fatal road accident in Suva.

The accident at Edinburgh Drive two weeks ago, involved the first secretary, Corporate Services at the South African High Commission in Fiji, Theo Mostert.

It is alleged that the first secretary was drunk at the time of the accident which caused the death of 26-year-old Ashneel Singh who was on his way to Suva to watch a late night movie.

The complaint was lodged by Tevita Ralulu, a former executive of the Ex-Police Officers Association.

Mr Ralulu claimed that the Commissioner should not have gone to Totogo Police Station and obstructed the process of investigation on the accident.

The Commissioner had gone to the Police Station to inform about the Diplomatic Immunity in regards to Vienna Convention 1961.

The ODPP has confirmed receiving the investigation file from Police.

It said the file would be returned to Police once it has completed the review of the matter.

Police would not make any further comment until the case file is returned by the ODPP.
