It will be a thanksgiving trip in remembrance of courage displayed by villagers in rescue

Members of the Fiji Girmit Foundation of New Zealand will be visiting Nasilai Village today.

This will be a thanksgiving trip in remembrance of the courage displayed by Nasilai villagers in risking their lives to save occupants of the ship Syria which ran aground on the Nasilai Reef on May 11, 1884.

A total of 497 inbound indentured labourers were aboard the Syria.

A release sent from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, said the delegation would conduct a sevusevu, gift a plaque of thanks and initiate a project with ongoing assistance to the community.

The delegation is led by  Harnam Singh Golian, former Fiji Member of Parliament, who resonated the importance of knowing Fiji’s Girmit History.

Yesterday Ratu Inoke welcomed and hosted the group to a morning tea.

He was thanked by members of the delegation for facilitating their trip to Fiji.

Ratu Inoke was the chief guest at the Fiji Girmit Foundation Remembrance Day in Auckland in May.

Mr Golian’s delegation included  Viren Lal and Thakur Ranjit Singh.
