Joann Young has been appointed as the new chairperson for the Fijian Commerce Commission

Women in executive positions, who can contribute to the boards and committees, are reluctant to step forward and apply.

These were the comments made by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya who was the chief guest during the Women in Business annual general meeting on Tuesday night.

Mr Koya said: “One of the challenges that Fiji faces is the lack of representation of women in Government boards and committees.

“I would like to urge you women to take up the challenge and apply to the boards and get involved in that level.

“Make your contribution count as you share your skills and expertise for the development of our beloved nation.”

He added women’s equal participation in high level decision-making roles was an important and visible form of participation.

Appointments

Mr Koya said there are two very important boards of the Ministry chaired by women.

These are the Fijian Commerce Commission which is chaired by Joann Young.

She was appointed on September 17 and her appointment has been gazetted. This was confirmed by chief executive officer Bobby Maharaj.

The other organisation is Film Fiji which is chaired by Shaenaz Voss.

Mr Koya said these two appointments were made based on merit.
