Minister for Youth and Sports Laiseni Tuitubou officiated at the opening of the FANCA International Club Championship Muslim tournament at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.
He urged the participants the importance of exercise in our daily lives.
“Physical exercise is good for the mind, body and spirit. Furthermore, team sports are good for learning accountability, dedication, and leadership, among many other traits. Putting it all together by playing a sport is a winning combination.
“It is also fact that many athletes do better academically as playing a sport requires a lot of time and energy. Some may think this would distract student-athletes from schoolwork but sports require memorization, repetition and learning skills-set that are directly relevant to class work,” Tuitubou said.
Tuitubou stressed how Government was working towards every Fijians’ health.
“The Fijian Government is committed to uplifting the lives of all Fijians but the onus is on each one of us to pay special attention to our health. As such, Government is working to promote a healthy lifestyle among all citizens of Fiji.
“This is by encouraging people to live active lifestyles, play regular sports and adopt healthy lifestyles. To reduce the onslaught of non-communicable and lifestyle diseases and therefore reduce national health bills.
“So as you play this beautiful sport, bear in mind the teachings of Islam through its context of attaching much importance to sports in order to create a physically powerful generation capable of sustaining fighting and resisting diseases.
The Minister for Youth and Sports also commends the Fiji Muslim League for organising the tournament.
“Playing a sport but it is in no way the least because sports help to cut down on pressure and stress. Exercising is a natural way to loosen up and let go of stress.”
