Recognising that the quality of fuel contributes significantly towards climate change, the Fijian Government plans to improve the standard of fuel.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, said this will result in cleaner fuel being imported and used in Fiji and reduction in sulphide oxide emissions.

“The decreasing world market prices resulting in lower domestic prices provide an ideal platform to herald in the new fuel standards,” he said.

“The new and improved standards will ensure a cleaner environment and will enable import of better technology vehicles, which will benefit all Fijians.”

Timeframes

Mr Koya said there are different aspects to changing fuel standards.

“There are a lot of things that needs to be looked at before we make the jump to Euro 4 or Euro 5 standard,” he said.

“All of those are being looked by the Ministry and the Commerce Commission. So everything has to be in place and proper and it has got to be good for all Fijians.”

Mr Koya said there is no timeframe as such but he has assured that it will be done very shortly.

“Government is very serious about it. All stakeholders are being consulted as we speak,” he said.

“When I say stakeholders, I don’t just mean the motor traders or the oil companies – I also mean the general populous.”
