In a bid to contribute to the saving of the environment, a woman of Kinoya has ventured into creating coffee tables out of recycled tyres.
Mary Adriu, 31, is part of the Sayadra Women’s Group in Kinoya, Nasinu.
They were among 600 women who showcased their hand-made products at this year’s National Womens Expo at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Ms Adriu said it was unfortunate that people could not see the importance of recycled items such as tyres which could also be used for beautification.
“I was sitting with a friend at home and we saw the old tyres so we thought – why not use it,” she said.
“This is a very good move especially to use items such as these, which are seen as rubbish to gain money.”
She said there were also other users of tyres which people could try out.
“What we were able to do depends on our capability and the effort we took. People need to take more effort in developing something out of these things.”
Ms Adriu said she had been receiving many orders for her product since the Expo’s opening. The coffee tables were selling at $150 each from their booth at the Vodafone Arena.
