The Government, through the Fisheries Department, has implemented development programmes that will benefit Fijians.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Fisheries and Forests Osea Naiqamu in Labasa.
“These development programmes will bring in much needed services to the rural communities and reduce the gap between the public and the arms of Government,” Mr Naiqamu said.
He said the programmes will empower the rural people to make a difference in their standards of living and ensure optimum returns from fish resources through an organised fish marketing system.
“Recently, Government has received fisheries assessment survey reports stating the decreasing stock of valuable tropical sea cucumbers from qoliqoli areas in Fiji,” he said.
“Throughout the Pacific and Fiji in particular, the well-known story describes dwindling numbers, smaller individuals and increasing reliance on exploiting low value species by the use of Underwater Breathing Apparatus of scuba gears.”
The Minister added Fiji’s economy and society are undergoing many reforms for the betterment of all Fijians which includes the sustainable development of resources.
“Fiji’s biodiversity and ecosystems, particularly marine and coastal are at a critical risk due to climate change, while at the same time they are of importance to the social and economic developments in Fiji,” he said.
Mr Naiqamu also said there are reforms in place to improve land and marine tenure and his Department is committed to empower the communities at large through the provisions of various support services.
