A pastor, who was awarded a President’s Medal – one of the highest honours by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau – yesterday, could only thank God for having the courage to save passengers from a bus fire in Savusavu two years ago.

Jotame Seli of the Revival Fellowship ministry was among 11 passengers who were travelling in a bus when it caught fire on Waisali Hill in Savusavu on August 2013.

During the ordeal, Pastor Seli bravely evacuated the passengers – mainly women – by guiding them safely out of the bus before running for the fire extinguisher.

“While I was travelling from Savusavu to Labasa, the bus that we were in caught fire during the journey. I was on the back seat and I managed to evacuate the passengers to safety through the windows and the door. Before I went out, I closed the windows and I used the fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

“I managed to control the fire from the bottom of the bus, in front, and inside the bus. We saved the bus, the passengers and our entire luggage.”

His bravery was recognised yesterday. Pastor Seli was among the 28 people who were awarded for their achievement or meritorious services under the Order of Fiji during the Investiture ceremony at Government House in Suva.

The President’s Medal is awarded only for acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril.

“I was not really expecting it, but God always has His own time. I thank the Almighty for His protection and the courage He gave me. As always we believe that and that’s what carried me along to do that courageous act,” Pastor Seli said.

“I thank God for the strength and the courage He gave me to be able to save those passengers,” he said.
