The Bula Charity Fund committee yesterday gave out cheques and gift packs worth $13,000 from its 2015 Bula Festival proceeds to 16 recipients.
The recipients included 12 families, orphanages, church groups, community policing groups and schools.
Nadi Bula Festival trust president Mohammed Hafiz said the charity work was a way of giving back to the community.
“The community of Nadi is very vital to the committee and by doing this charity work we are at least supporting the community back,” he said.
“This year the 10 contestants of the Nadi Bula Festival raised the substantial amount of $13 000 which have made it possible for us to conduct this charity work.”
Mr Hafiz acknowledged major sponsors Digicel for sponsoring the successful festival this year.
“We salute our major sponsors and we do hope that we will continue to work together in years to come. We also hope to have a bigger festival in the coming years,” he said.
Digicel regional west manager Florence Eyre said they were happy to be part of the event.
“Thank you Bula committee for your time and effort and as you know we wouldn’t have be here if we were inconsiderate of your plight,” she said.
“Digicel is proud and very delighted to partner with the Bula Charity Fund committee in supporting the members of the Nadi community.
“Today (yesterday) we see the fruits of our joint partnerships in which the Bula Festival has benefitted the Nadi community in an extensive way.”
Recipient and house fire victim Iliavi Nabou, whose house got destroyed in Sabeto Village, Nadi, a fortnight ago, commended the trust for the assistance.
“We all face tough times in our lives and we are in the process of trying to get on our feet and we cannot find words to describe this kind gesture. Thank you Digicel and the Nadi Bula Festival committee for the support.”
