Fiji Officially Joins IPU

Fiii is now officially a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. This follows the official announcement of the Governing Council of the IPU that it has accepted Fiji’s application for re-affiliation.
Fiji becomes the 167th member of the Union.
Speaker of the Fijian Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni addressed the Assembly this morning and thanked the Governing Council for its acceptance of Fiji into the IPU family.
“Fiji is indeed honoured to be re-affiliated to such a robust and renowned institution as the IPU and expresses its sincere appreciation to the Governing Council for responding positively to our request,” Dr Jiko Luveni said.
Dr Luveni informed the Assembly that plans are underway to establish a Parliamentary Sustainable Development Goal’s Committee to ensure mainstreaming of the SDGs into National Development programmes of the Executive with its Parliamentary monitoring tools.
The Fijian Parliament had passed a resolution in May for re-affiliation. Following this process, relevant documents were passed on to the IPU as requirements for formalisation.
The Fiji Parliament now has access to technical and advisory assistance offered by the IPU.
Also present to support Fiji’s re-affiliation, was Deputy Speaker, Ruveni Nadalo, Madam Nazhat Shameem Khan PRUNOG, Secretary General Viniana Namosimalua and 1st Secretary Geneva Ajendra A. Pratap.
The delegation will attend various sessions of the Assembly which ends next Wednesday.
