The celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Fiji-German Co-operation in the forestry sector will encourage more partnership in the years to come.

The German Commissioner for Pacific Islands in the German Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, Juergen Thomas Schrod made this comment during the anniversary celebration at Thurston Gardens in Suva yesterday.

Fiji established diplomatic relations with Germany in 1973. They embarked on a bilateral partnership in the forestry sector in 1985.

Mr Schrod said Germany was watching with keen interests as Fiji implemented reforms in order to drive forward its political and economic development.

“Our countries work to protect the climate and actively advocate on it. Only by pulling together, we can combat climate change and its power raging consequences,” Mr Schrod said.

“Our collaboration in this field plays a crucial and important role in this regard and makes me confident that the relations between Germany and Fiji and in the Pacific island region will keep on growing in strength.”

Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Osea Naqamu said the Department of Forestry had been fortunate in having the support of the German government.

This, he said, assisted in capacity building of the organisation, the research division, individuals and landowners involved in the collaboration.

To date, Mr Naqamu said the German government had spent about FJ$30million towards Fiji’s forestry sector.
