The Fijian Women’s Under-17 team are going to make their debut in next year’s OFC U17 Women’s Championship.
It will be from January 9-23 in Cook Islands.
The official draw of the championship has been completed at the OFC Headquarters in Auckland, New Zealand, confirming the road to next year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan.
Fiji have been drawn in Pool B with Cook Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea while Pool A contains Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and defending champions New Zealand.
OFC competitions and events manager Michael Song said the tournament is a proven pathway for players to experience football at higher level.
“In terms of regional development it is very encouraging to see the nine OFC member associations enter this competition,” he said.
“Players who have taken part in the past have gone on to play at the U20 level and represent their nation as part of the senior teams.
“It is a great opportunity for the next generation of young players to make their mark, and for some the chance to play at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.”
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals.
New Zealand have won the only two previous editions of the OFC U17 Women’s Championship, and after qualifying directly in 2014, will be shooting for a fourth-straight appearance at Women’s U17 World Cup. Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu will be competing at the tournament for the first time.
