Govt Seeks Nullification Of Immunity For Diplomat

The Fijian Government has asked the South African Government to waive immunity for a diplomat involved in a fatal road accident that occurred at 2200hrs on October 2, 2015 on Edinburgh Drive, Suva.

Twenty-six-year old Ashneel Singh was killed in the accident.

A statement from the Department of Information said: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with the Police and other relevant Government agencies, including the High Commission of South Africa, to resolve this incident.

“Under the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961, the South African Government has the right to waive the diplomatic immunity accorded to its official who was involved in the accident.

“Following a request from the Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested that the South African Government waive diplomatic immunity against its official, Mr Theodorus Mostert, to allow further action to be taken to address his role in the accident.”

The South African Government have yet to make a decision on the matter.
