Government is doing all it can to avoid an International Labour Organisation Commission of Inquiry into Fiji, says new Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Semi Koroilavesau.

Mr Koroilavesau said the Commission of Inquiry would not do well, not only to the workers in Fiji but the economy as well.

“The unions have rejected signing the report and I am in continuous discussions with them to find an amicable solution to the issue,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

“I continue to have dialogues with various stakeholders to try to come to an amicable solution. Government is trying its best to protect the interest of workers because basically a Commission of Inquiry will affect the population of workers in Fiji and more so the economy.

“There is a genuine consensus to try and avert it. There’s a lot of goodwill there. The unions have their positions and they are not moving on their positions.”

He said they had until next month to resolve the situation.

The unions, last week, had rejected signing a joint report by them, Government and Employers to the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

They are however, calling for a Commission of Inquiry.

Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions (FICTU) general secretary Attar Singh had earlier said they did not sign the report because it fell short of what they expected.

This is the joint report that is expected to be studied by the ILO after its submission during the ILO meeting in Geneva on November 11.

The ILO, after studying it will then decide whether to institute a Commission of Inquiry into Fiji or not.
