The position of president of the Fijian Media Association’s (FMA) will be contested at next month’s annual general meeting (AGM).

This follows the departure of its current president, Ricardo Morris, for further studies at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.

This was confirmed by the general secretary, Stanley Simpson, during a meeting on Wednesday at the Fiji TV headquarters in Suva.

Apart from the vacant president post, Mr Simpson said the treasurer and post of radio rep would also be contested.

Former treasurer Maggie Boyle, and radio rep Rita Narayan have resigned.

Three other committees were formed during the meeting. These committees will look after the proposals and partnership aspects of the association, the membership, and training and development of association members.

Mr Simpson said the association plans to improve capacity development of all members and all other aspects of the local media industry.

He said they were also looking at engaging actively with the Government and other donor partners on a number of issues.

The AGM will be held on the November 27. A venue has not been confirmed yet.

The meeting on Wednesday was attended by journalists from Fiji TV, Fiji Sun, Fiji Times, FBC, Department of Information, Business Melanesia and Pacific Island News Association (PINA).
