Village Survey Starts In Lau

The village demarcation team from the Ministry of the iTauke Affairs has started its work in the Lau Group.
Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Savenaca Kaunisela, said they had completed work in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and the Lomaiviti Group.
They have started work on islands that have airstrips and would progress to other islands later.
“Reactions to the survey from villages have been positive,” Mr Kaunisela said.
Most village boundaries have been extended to enable villagers to think about future developments and amenities like footpaths, reticulation systems and sewerage before the boundaries were drawn up.
He said the survey of village boundaries would help stop land disputes and allow for better future planning.
Government has committed close to $348,566 to the project to ensure that all villages in Fiji are demarcated and gazetted as full iTaukei villages by next year.
Villages which earlier rejected the survey, had changed their decisions in order to benefit from Government assistance and developments.
