Thirty-two students were left homeless after the double-storey building they lived in caught fire at Tamasua Street, off Rukua Street in Nailuva, Suva, yesterday.

Kishan Prasad, 20, a first-year Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering student of the University of the South Pacific, could not hold back his tears after losing most of his belongings in the fire.

“All the other students were at the soccer tournament when the fire started and I was alone with my roommate,” he said.

“I was awoken by the heat in the room and when I woke up the room was engulfed with smoke and then I quickly woke my roommate.”

Kishan managed to grab his phone and laptop and ran out with his roommate. He said he was thankful they did not fall in to a deep sleep.

“I don’t have enough clothes while my friends lost most of their clothes in the fire and now we are not sure of where to stay for the night. We’re all from the West – Ba, Nadi, Lautoka and Sigatoka areas,” he said.

The fire is believed to have started at 11am from a room that was located at the bottom flat.

Fire teams from Suva and Valelevu managed to put out the fire and stop it from completely destroying the top floor.

NFA chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai is reminding home owners to take extra care.

“Home owners must always be mindful of fire ignition sources at home like matches, candles, prayer diyas, electrical appliances and during cooking; ensure they are put off completely before leaving home or going to bed,” Mr Moceitai said.

Meanwhile the NFA is conducting investigation to determine the cause of fire.
