More than 200 school girls who are brownies gathered at the St Agnes Primary School in Nabua, Suva, yesterday to participate in the annual Brownie Revel.

Brownie Revel is a special day when brownies from different schools or units get together, learn life skills, leadership and take part in fun and adventurous activities.

Fijian Brownies, from the ages of seven to 10, are part of the Fiji Girl Guides Association.

Suva Brownie provincial commissioner Make Sorovakarua said, “The girls not only learn how to become great leaders, but also learn weaving of mats and baskets, painting, drawing, gardening, singing and baking.

“This is a way some girls can learn how to bake because most girls prefer learning things in groups than learning alone.

“This year we have seven schools – St Agnes Primary,  Samabula Primary, Marcellin Primary, Deenbandhu Primary, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Primary, Suva Primary and Draiba Primary. We want more schools to join us,” she said. Healthy living was also taught. The main thing for the girls is to make friends with girls from other schools.”

Samabula Primary School Year Three student, Venina Bulileka, said; “I learned how to weave a mat, paint and I am going to continue to learn more good stuff because it will help me in the future,” she said.

Meanwhile, national Brownie advisor Keleni Dilau urges schools to join the movement.

“Everything they learn from here will help them in the future,” she said.
