In order for women’s football to grow, more game time and tournaments is needed to help develop and grow the sport in the country.

Rewa coach Marika Rodu made the comment during the Fiji Football Association Senior Women’s National League held at Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa yesterday.

“We have seen a lot of improvement in the way women play but more could be done,” Rodu said.

“We are trying to lure more girls to play football.

“A lot of younger players have joined which is good but we need more in order to prepare them for national duties and also in future tournaments.”

However, in order to prepare and develop the players, Rodu said a lot more game time is needed.

“Women don’t have many tournaments to participate in compared to the men which is something that is lacking,” he said.

“Fiji FA is doing the best they can but not enough and they also need more support from the men’s association to help grow female interest in football and competitions.

“That is something I believe needs to change, as much attention and focus we show on our mens teams, should the same for our women’s teams.”

Meanwhile, Nasinu beat Lami 5-1, Tailevu Naitasiri drew with Suva 2-2 while Rewa thrashed Navua 7-0. In the games played on Wednesday, Rewa thumped Suva 9-0 while Navua beat Nasinu 3-0.
