Nine families whose homes were destroyed by fire this year in Labasa were presented $500 each by the Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival committee.

The money was from the carnival proceeds.

Carnival committee chairman Satish Kumar, during the thanksgiving night at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa last Saturday, said the committee wanted to provide the much-needed assistance to these families.

“Our committee is focused on providing community service and the first project for this year was where we provided a 4×4 twin cab for Wainikoro Community Post,” Mr Kumar said.

“We found out that the Police officers at this station did not have any vehicle to travel around Wainikoro to do their job.

“They either rode on horseback or walked to attend to people’s cases.

“Wainikoro is a very big area and considering the importance of Police service to this area, the committee decided to assist them. The vehicle was worth of $40,000.”

When questioned about the total proceeds from the carnival, Mr Kumar said the finance committee was still preparing the accounts as some of the sponsors were yet to pay.

He said all financial proceeds would be diverted towards crime prevention projects in the Northern Division.
