Water Cuts Beset Labasa Areas

Three days of water cuts in various parts of Labasa has caused lot of inconvenience.
Areas affected were Bulileka, Mani Road, Vitadra, Urata, Boca, Dreketilailai, Anuve, Boubale, Basoga, Vunivau, Soasoa, Batinikama, Rara Housing, Lajonia, Wailevu, Tiri Road and Qelewaqa.
More than 15 houses situated along Namoli Road in Batinikama outside Labasa had no water for three days.
Jai Raji, 69, cried when the Fiji Sun approached her for a comment yesterday.
She said she had no one to go to, to ask for water.
“My house is situated up on the hill and I do not have transport to go out and fetch water,” Ms Raji said.
“I’m really in a helpless situation.”
Meanwhile Namoli sugar cane farmer Amrika Prasad said he had to stop his 15 sugarcane cutters from harvesting cane because there was no cooking, drinking and bathing water.
“I have to cut cane and supply to the mill before it closes on Tuesday (tomorrow),” Mr Prasad said.
“If this situation continues it would be a big loss to me and the health of my labourers is put at risk.”
Another Namoli Road resident, Mahend Prasad said a driver of Water Authority of Fiji did cart water to his house yesterday morning but refused to help his neighbours.
“I requested him to at least give some drinking water to my neighbours but he refused and said he had to go Vunivau,” he said.
Meanwhile the WAF said in a statement that the interruption in supply was because of repair works on a burst main at Navau.
The statement said water carts had been provided to the affected customers.
It also stated that normal water supply was expected to be gradually restored at 10pm last night
WAF regrets any inconvenience caused to its customers.
