The Fijian national men’s hockey team have failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil after winning bronze in the Oceania Cup in New Zealand last week.

Fiji Hockey Federation president Dr Robin Mitchell said while Fiji has not qualified, they put up solid performances against Australia and New Zealand.

“This competition was a must win for New Zealand, Samoa and Fiji in order to qualify for Rio. But now only Australia has qualified for the men’s and New Zealand and Australia have qualified for the women’s,” Dr Mitchell said.

“We basically took part to improve our ranking in order to get closer to qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in 2018 in Gold Coast.

“Preparation for the Oceania Cup was quite short for us but Fiji has improved in terms of performance and that really shows how far we have come.”

Fiji had a disappointing start to the tournament losing to powerhouse Australia 17-0 before thrashing Samoa 20-0 and succumbing to New Zealand 12-0 in their third game.

Their last game was crucial which they had to win and they did so beating Samoa 11-1 with Leevan Dutta scoring four goals followed by Adrian Smith with a hat-trick, James Saqacala scoring two with a goal each from Alsace Smith and Jerome Edwards.

Australia won the Oceania Cup beating New Zealand 3-2 to win gold and qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
