The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Chief of Mission for Australia and Coordinator and Advisor for New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific, Joseph Samuel Appiah, yesterday paid a courtesy call on Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

Mr Appiah conveyed the IOM’s Director General’s, Ambassador William Lacy Swing’s appreciation for the IOM’s presence in Fiji; as the IOM will soon establish a physical presence in Fiji. Mr Appiah during his meeting with Minister Kubuabola stated that the IOM is in the process of identifying suitable office space in Suva and also formalising the appointment of a National Officer.

Mr Appiah stated that the IOM will be looking into issues specific to Fiji and also the region. Mr Appiah also briefed Minister Kubuabola on some of the work and initiatives that the IOM was undertaking in the region.

Mr. Appiah also conveyed interest with assisting the Fiji Government in undertaking an IOM funded project on Fiji’s rural to urban drift trend which would assist the Fiji Government towards future infrastructure planning.

Minister Kubuabola briefed Mr. Appiah on the issue of climate changes in the Pacific especially in respect of the threat that it posed to lower lying countries in the region and also expressed his gratitude for the IOM’s presence in Fiji. Minister Kubuabola offered the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs towards the establishment and successful operation of the IOM in Fiji and the region.
