Professor Ian Rouse has stepped down as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the Fiji National University (FNU).

The FNU Council has granted annual leave for Professor Rouse starting next Monday before he returns to his initial position as the Dean of College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Services.

FNU Chancellor and chair of Council, Ikbal Jannif, in a press statement said: “The Council also agreed that affairs of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor in the interim be managed by the Chancellor with the assistance of the chairs of the Council Committees.”

This arrangement is until the new Vice-Chancellor takes office.

He said the process of appointing the new VC was progressing well and the appointment committee has met twice.

Two applicants were shortlisted from the first round of interviews held last Friday, however Mr Jannif said he could not give details because of confidentiality.

“We hope to make the appointment by late November or early December, but should not expect the VC to take office until early 2016.”

Professor Rouse said prior to the council meeting last Friday, he had discussed his intention for a period of annual leave during November and December before returning to his initial position.

“I did not apply for the Vice-Chancellor’s position, it was never my intention to apply for the position,” he said.

“I took up the role of acting VC 10 months ago upon request from the then Chancellor Dr Mahendra Reddy because of my belief in this institution and the great potential it has, but I never thought it will last for that long.

Meanwhile Professor Rajat Gyaneshwar who stepped in the shoes of Professor Rouse as acting Dean for College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Services also returns to his substantive position.

Professor Gyaneshwar is the professor for Obstetrics and Gynecology at the College.
