Nasinu Town Council has fined 159 people, so far this year for littering.

And 38 people have been convicted in court for litter-related offences.

The council also issues a 24 hour waste removal notice to allow the ratepayers to remove refuse from sites in order to avoid fines.

Council chief executive officer Aktar Ali said: “The council has started enforcement work during nights as many residents use the darkness of the night to litter on Nasinu roads.”

Mr Ali has urged residents to display civic pride towards their town and avoid indiscriminate dumping of rubbish.

“They are also advised to make use of the collection schedules for the collection of wastes and avoid placing their rubbish on non-collection days,” he said.

Council also requests information about offenders so that on-the-spot fines can be imposed on them.

The council has regular collection system whereby refuse is collected from different areas daily.

Refuse collection is done in three modes with household refuse, green waste and e-waste all collected separately. All collections are well co-ordinated and ratepayers are advised via scheduled programmes which are given to ratepayers.
