The poor turnout at the public consultation on the changes to laws covering State land at Nasole Methodist Church Hall, Nasinu, yesterday had forced the Ministry of Lands to reschedule this programme.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources Malakai Nalawa told the Fiji Sun that new dates would be published in the dailies.

“In fact there were more officials at the hall and only six people signed to signify their attendance,” he said.

Mr Nalawa said that even though there was also a poor turnout at the Suva Civic Centre on Monday, their contributions were very helpful.

The tuirara of Nasole Methodist Church, Isimeli Raqio, said he had made an announcement on Sunday about the consultations and members of the church were aware of it.

However, he said most of the elders were at a funeral gathering at Nasole yesterday.

Mr Raqio was informed of the change and was told the new timetable would be sent to him.

Mr Nalawa said they would now use the evenings as most of the working people could attend.

He said the people needed to be consulted and also make their contributions to the proposed changes to the Crown Lands Act.

The ministry has been given until December to submit a paper to Cabinet on the changes to the act.
