Fijian seasonal workers in Australia and New Zealand have won praises from their respective employers.

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Semi Koroilavesau, said he had been advised by the New Zealand High Commission to keep the recruitment going.

He said under the Regional Seasonal Workers Scheme for New Zealand, the pilot group’s term would end in December when six Fijians, currently serving their contracts, would return.

“Thirty-one Fijians have been employed since last year under the scheme and our recruitment remains focused on unemployed youths in rural remote areas,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

He said a new agreement with Australia would soon be signed extending the programme which currently had 109 Fijians involved.

The Minister said the signing was supposed to be done by Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop but she had been busy on other engagements and the Minister for Labour would replace her.

“We will be working with the same selection criteria which targets unemployed youths in rural areas.”

He said they were creating a workforce to be ready when there was a chance of employment in Australia.
