Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has called for an urgent meeting to resolve a row over the granting of a Special Prospecting Licence (SPL 1420) to the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) to explore minerals in the Namosi area.

The licence area is primarily in Namosi and Naitasiri provinces.

Mr Bainimarama heard during the talanoa session at Waivaka Village yesterday a claim that a majority of the landowners were against the exploration.

Their spokesman, Sipiriano Nariva, said those who had given their consent were those living outside the province.

He said there was no consultation.

However, Isei Rayasi, of the Mineral Resources Department (MRD), said they had carried out consultations in all the villages and they had given their consent.

Mr Bainimarama heard a claim that those who had given their consent were not in the Vola ni Kawa Bula (VKB, iTaukei Registry)

Mr Bainimarama reminded them that the company was just carrying out explorations to assess the potential of copper and gold in this area.

He confirmed that he would call an urgent meeting with the Minister for Lands and Minerals and all those involved to resolve the issue.

Mr Nariva said he was happy with the decision.

For mining to take place, he said it would take years for a decision to be made by Government.
