Parents, teachers and educators were commended for their hard work in providing for children with special need in the western division.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar made the comment while officially opening the McDonald’s WESTCOSE Games for Children with Special Needs at Prince Charles Park in Nadi yesterday.

“They are special children and for that the Fijian Government has promoted the establishment of special schools for them,” she said.

“Their rights and privilege are guaranteed in our constitution and under the convention rights of the child.

“I must thank the parents for their love, care and good heart. Your special attention has given them the opportunity to be educated for life-learning knowledge and skills.

“This is an opportunity for our children to enjoy sports and just to have fun with their friends, schoolmates and families too.

“I’m sure they will make new friends and even parents will get to meet other parents and share their wonderful stories.

“It is heartening to see six special schools including Tavua District and Naseyani Primary taking part in this fun day.

“Sports are important for children of all ages and abilities. We all know that school sport getting children active is an essential weapon in the fight against Non-Communicable Disease (NCD).

“I fully support this initiative and you can be assured of the ongoing support of my ministry in the years to come. Count us in the New Year to further the dimension of this programme.”

The WESTCOSE Games end today.
