A family of six  survived a major mishap after a 10- wheeler truck rolled into their house damaging their kitchen in Delainavesi yesterday morning.

House owner Vitinia Sorovaki, 46, was shocked when the truck rolled down the road and into their house while she was working in the kitchen.

“I was doing my washing and was shocked when I heard people shouting that a truck was rolling towards our home,” Mrs Sorovaki said.

“They were shouting for us to get out of the house. I was terrified because we have a five-month old baby in the house and we quickly rushed to safety. I am relieved that no one was hurt but it was shocking for something like this to happen.”

Part of their kitchen was damaged together with utensils and appliances which the family claims to be worth approximately $10,000.

Driver of the truck, Alipate Nawaitabu said the handbrake and gearbox was malfunctioning.

“I had made two trips to Laucala Beach and on my third trip I noticed a fault in the gear so I pulled over and went to buy a recharge card to call the owner (of the vehicle) and let him know of the default,” he said.

“But I was surprised when I returned, I could not see the vehicle and thought somebody towed it away until I saw a big crowd near this family’s house so I rushed to see that the vehicle had rolled down to their house damaging one side of their house,” he said.

Police and Land Transport Authority officers were at the scene to carry out their investigation.
