Child Abuse Prevention Campaign Launched

Sexual abuse describes a range of acts or behaviours where adults, older or more powerful person uses a child for sexual purpose, says Fiji Police Force Juvenile Bureau officer in charge – Inspector Orisi Tukana.

He revealed this during his presentation at the launch of the 2015 prevention of child abuse and neglect celebration at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva yesterday.

“Sexual abuse can occur within or outside the family and can be homosexual or heterosexual in nature and most sexual abuse is perpetrated by someone the child knows and trusts,” he said.

Mr Tukana said child sexual abuse was largely a silent and witness-free crime often leaving no physical signs and actively hidden by perpetrators.

“There are actions and behaviours that describe child sexual abuse which includes any touching for sexual purpose… use of internet to have sexual conversations with a child, adult seeks to have the child touch them for sexual purpose and involving the child in pornographic activities or prostitution,” he said.
