Labasa Drivers Yet to be charged

Two drivers from Labasa who allegedly caused fatal road accidents this month are yet to be charged, Police said.

Shazeel Khan, 21, is alleged to have caused the death of 55-year-old Rabi islander, Biriam Taumgea while driving along Waiqele on October 22.

The second accident involved a seven-tonne truck whose driver failed to stop after forcing a tractor off the road while carting sugarcane to the Labasa Mill.

The accident happened at the Tuatua Road junction on October 14 while the sugarcane on both vehicles brushed each other when the truck overtook the tractor.

The tractor veered off the road and crashed into a compound belonging to Ram Krishna of Tuatua.

The impact threw tractor driver, Sharneel Chand, 21, onto the compound where he was reported to have landed on a concrete slab.

Mr Chand was admitted in a very critical condition at Labasa Hospital and died eight days later while being airlifted to Suva after an operation at the Labasa Hospital.

Ms Naisoro confirmed that Mr Khan and the truck driver were yet to be charged.

She said they had been questioned and released.

Investigations continue.
