Sharing her lifelong-acquired knowledge and skills are one of Nunia Tagimuri’s priorities in life.

The 68-year-old from Ono-i-Lau is known among the villagers of Motukana in Ono for her handicraft work especially in weaving different types of iTaukei mats.

“I have been weaving mats all my life and have used income earned to send my seven children to school; they are now all working and married,”she said.

Mrs Tagimuri specialises in weaving a special type of mat which only a few women can; this mat, known as the tabukaisi (chiefly mat), is only used for special chiefly gatherings (small decorative mats, icoco (big mats used for homes and ceremonies, vakabati (medium-sized mats with linings decorated with coloured wool) to name a few.

She was also part of the National Women’s Expo two weeks ago. She returns to her village next week.

“I came from the village for the Expo and even my mats were sold out as there was a lot of demand and this was very encouraging,” she said.

“Today the Lau Women Exhibition meeting is one of the best times we as women can come together and learn from each other’s knowledge and skills and talk of how we can educate our younger generation.”

Emeline Veikauyaki, 68, from Moce, who lives in Suva with her children, makes masi.

“Elders from our village in Delamakotu, Moce islanders, are known to specialise in masi- making and this has helped us to send our children to school,” Mrs Vaikauyaki said.

“Today, during this meeting, we are able to come together as women and sell our products as it is expensive to set up a market stall in town,” she said.

The Lau Women Exhibition meeting ended yesterday.
