Pursing a career in journalism was not part of Edward Tavanavanua’s dream.

It was his mother, who had encouraged him to take up a journalism course at the University of the South Pacific in Suva.

Last Friday, Edward was awarded the Best-Graduating Journalism student during the USP Journalism Awards night.

The $1000 award received by Edward was sponsored by the Fiji Sun News Limited.

“My dream was to take up Visual Arts and Fashion Designing,” Edward said.

“However I found journalism very appealing; it involved storytelling and it involved arts and designs and it felt like a challenge and it has taught me a lot of lifelong lessons.”

Edward is currently a part time worker at New Wave magazine in Suva.

Chief guest and French Ambassador Michel Djovovic said training was imperative for journalists.

“Journalists need to be professional and flawless in order to convey truth and unbiased information,”Mr Djovovic said.

“Journalists should be the compass that guides us to serious information,”he said.

Mr Djovovic said that during his one year in Fiji, he noticed that most Journalists in Fiji were young and this was very encouraging.

New Zealand-based professor in journalism Dr David Robie during his address acknowledged the French government for supporting the establishment of the USP Journalism Programme.
