The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Acting Commander, Commodore Viliame Naupoto, is ready to lead the institution if he is reappointed.

His three-month contract ends today.  Speaking to the Fiji Sun yesterday, he said he was aware that his acting position would end today.

“If I’m approached by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to continue, I will accept it in good faith,” he said.

In an earlier interview with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama after the Fiji Day Parade at Buckhurst Park in Laucala, Suva, he said some senior military officers who were contenders for the Commander’s post, would be sent to a War College for further training.

When they returned he said the selection of a new Commander would be made and the name to be forwarded to the Constitutional Offices Commission.

Section 131 (4) of the Constitution says – “The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is appointed by the President, on the advice of the Constitutional Offices Commission, following consultation with the Minister responsible for the RFMF.”

Prime Minister Bainimarama had said that while waiting for these senior officers, Commodore Naupoto would be in command of the RFMF.

Commodore Naupoto had earlier told the Fiji Sun that he would like senior officers in contention for the Commander’s post to attend a War College as he could hold the fort until they returned.

Officers who are likely to be promoted to senior ranks are selected to study at the War College in preparation for higher staff and command positions.

RFMF Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho will soon leave to study at a War College in Australia.
