Lautoka Market Vendors Association president Makereta Rika, 75, said vendors, especially women, had been helped through the opening of the Lautoka Market Open Shed last Friday.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama opened the shed and also handed-over small and micro-business grants to recipients.

“In the forty-six years I have been president of the association, this is the first time we are receiving facilities of great quality and members of the public are happy,” Ms Rika said.

“We are so thankful to the Prime Minister for supporting us. Now the women can sleep in better conditions and God only knows the difficulties we face. Today our prayers have been answered.”

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra said market vendors would no longer be exposed to unhealthy and unhygienic conditions when selling vegetables.

“This project clearly demonstrates that we care about your wellbeing and welfare,” he said.

“I sincerely thank the Prime Minister and the Government for all that they had done to improve living standards of ordinary Fijians.”

Mr Nakauvadra said the shed was co-founded by Government, UN Women and Lautoka City Council.
