China and Fiji’s diplomatic relations have grown in leaps and bounds over the past years.

Since 1975, China and Fiji have developed a co-operative relationship based on mutual respect, equal partnership and co-operation.

This has been strengthened after leaders from both sides paid successful visits to each other’s countries.

In September, a  seven-member team from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces took part in the world’s biggest V-Day  parade in Beijing.

A statement from the Chinese Embassy said: “With joint efforts from both sides, the two countries have carried out practical co-operation in various fields of trade, culture, education and tourism.”

This co-operation has brought tangible benefits to both sides.

“Last year, the bilateral trade volume reached (F$729.53m), an increase of 11.9 per cent over the previous year,” the embassy said.

“28,000 Chinese tourists visited Fiji. China has now become one of the fastest-growing source countries for Fiji’s tourism.

“At present, China-Fiji relations stand at a new historical starting point, facing many new opportunities of further development.”

To celebrate this growing relationship, November 5 has been set aside to look at the achievements in bilateral exchanges and co-operation over the last 40 years.

On Thursday, a photo exhibition featuring China-Fiji friendship and co-operation will be launched at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

This will be followed by a symposium which will be opened by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

The symposium consists of three sessions including “Working for the Strategic Partnership of Mutual Respect and Common Development.”

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Ping and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Esala Nayasi, will make speeches respectively on China-Fiji relationship.

Afterwards, two parallel sessions will discuss the themes of “China-Fiji Economic and Trade Ties” and “China-Fiji Agricultural Co-operation”.

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Reserve Bank of Fiji, Investment Fiji, the Association of Chinese Enterprises in Fiji and Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University of China, will speak and hold panel discussions on further developing practical co-operation between China and Fiji in various fields.

A reception will follow in the evening.

Invited guests will include Fiji’s national leaders, ministers and senior officials, members of diplomatic corps and international organisations based in Suva, representatives of Chinese companies and Chinese community groups.
