Concerns of work security for some Pacific Transport bus drivers was clarified yesterday by the company’s management.

It comes after some drivers, were handed a letter stating that Pacific Transport was handing over its rural to city routes to another bus company, Classic Buses Limited.

These drivers had been working for Pacific Transport for many years.

Driver, Vinod Maharaj, said: “Some drivers have been driving for about 30 years so this has come as a shock to us, but we have a contract with them that says they cannot lay us off whenever they want to.”

However, GM Nitesh Chand has assured that the employment of the concerned drivers were secured with Classic Buses Limited.

“It’s only the sale of the rural and city operations; not the whole operation. They (the drivers) have not been laid off,” he said.

“The drivers along with the buses have been transferred to Classic Buses. A notice was given to them and we have informed them of the change.”

Classic Buses Limited director Adnan Mohammed also confirmed talks were made regarding the re-employment of the Pacific Transport drivers to Classic Buses Limited.

“Yes talks were made just to determine that we will be managing the rural and city operations but they will be working as they were,” he said.

“The drivers were supposed to resume work today (yesterday) with Classic Busses but only four turned up.”
