Fifteen of the 20 people who were victims of serious sexual offences in October were under the age of 18, new statistics from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) revealed.

The data released by the ODPP relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the ODPP throughout last month.

Out of the 15 victims of serious sexual offences, seven were between the ages of three and 11, while eight were between the ages of 12 and 17.

There were 11 rape victims under the age of 18 years, three victims of sexual assault and there was one victim of defilement. Three cases were discontinued before the Courts after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed for three rape matters.

According to the statistics there were 38 separate incidents involving the 20 victims. The 38 separate incidents of serious sexual offences consisted of rape (30), sexual assault (7), and defilement (1), where 21 people have been charged.

There was one serious sexual offence that involved a 3-year-old child. There were 14 serious sexual offences involving relatives and of these 14, there were 10 rape matters and 4 sexual assault matters.
