A fifth person, who was charged in relation to the alleged indecent assault of a prison escapee, appeared at the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.

Pita Matairavula is charged together with three former Police officers, Sanita Laqenasici, Jona Davonu, Semesi Naduka and former soldier Filimone Catimaibulu for allegedly unlawfully and indecently assaulting prison escapee Iowane Benedito at Colo-i-Suva.

Benedito had escaped from the Suva Corrections Centre on November 12, 2012 and the alleged incident happened on November 28, 2012.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele yesterday.

Defence lawyer Mehaboob Raza made bail application for his client stating that the accused was married with two children and voluntarily surrended himself at Valelevu Police Station and was a first-offender.

However State objected to bail citing the issue to be of national interest.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Michael Delany told the court that the Police were turned away from the military barracks when they went to arrest the accused.

The court heard that Matairavula had avoided arrest since October 21 and since Police failed to arrest him at his residence and at the Military barracks, they showed up at the High Court in Lautoka last week where the accused was facing charges in relation to Vilikesa Soko’s death.

The case has been adjourned to November 13 for bail ruling and Matairavula remanded in custody.

Meanwhile the other four accused in this case are out on bail under strict conditions and the case will be called on December 2.
