Villagers in Nabukavesi outside Navua will now have to look for other means of water source after the creek they depended on became polluted yesterday morning.

This was after a 10-wheeler truck carrying paint veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. The paint spilled into the creek.

Pastor Ratu Pio Camaisala said there were women and children around the creek when the incident happened.

“Lucky no villagers were hurt as they were around the creek going about their usual business,” he said.

“The creek is the villagers’ main water source, and now they have nowhere else to turn to because the tap water flow in our area is not good.”

Another villager, Frank Matakibau expressed his disappointment while looking over the accident site.

He said they were surprised when the truck which was on its way to Suva, suddenly veered off the road and crashed into the creek.

“We can’t use this creek now, there’s paint all over,” Mr Matakibau said.

“We use this water for washing and even school kids use this to bath every morning before they go to school and even in the afternoon.

“Women use it for washing clothes and dishes since we always face frequent  water problems in our area; we always depend on the creek but now that it has paint spill all over, we can’t use it.

“This spill will definitely end up in the sea.” Mr Matakibau added.

The driver of the truck sustained injuries and is admitted in the hospital.

However, no comments could be obtained from Police after calls and emails sent to Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
