Girl, 6, In Hospital After Allegedly Abducted, Raped

A six-year-old girl is admitted in hospital after she was allegedly abducted from her home and raped in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police are looking for a man, believed to be in his 40s, who is alleged to have committed the offences.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “Investigations are underway following the alleged rape of a six-year old student on Monday morning.

“The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning and the victim was taken by an unknown person away from her home.

“Attempts made by her family to locate her were unsuccessful and she managed to walk back home after sometime whereby a report was lodged at the Police Station.”

A relative who wished to remain anonymous said the alleged perpetrator had gone into the victim’s home and carried her from her bed while she was sleeping.

“At about 1.30am, her brother had noticed that the man had taken his sister and alerted his mother, but by that time it was too late because the girl was missing from her bed,” the relative said.

“The victim was sleeping alongside her siblings when the alleged incident occurred. The man carried her to a spot from her home and allegedly raped her. The man is new to the community. We all looked for her and about 3am we saw her walking back bleeding and she was crying.”

Ms Naisoro, reminding the public to be vigilant against the abuse and ill treatment of women and children.

“The responsibility of curbing these crimes can no longer be placed on the Fiji Police Force alone. We are again requesting every individual’s co-operation if we are to prevent any other child becoming a victim,” Ms Naisoro said.
