Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola met with the Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific,  Steve Ciobo along the margins of the Ninth Conference of the Pacific Community currently underway in Niue.

Mr Ciobo said his recent visit to Fiji was fruitful and was glad that the diplomatic relationship between Fiji and Australia were on-track.

Both Ministers used the opportunity to discuss a range of issues including progress with the PACER plus negotiations and Australia’s seasonal worker and aid programme.

Mr Ciobo advised that Australia would like to see reduced barriers to trade in the Pacific whilst at the same time taking into consideration the various needs and levels of development for the individual countries in the region.

He was also pleased to see the increased number of Fijians coming into Australia under the seasonal worker programme and also the number of Australian visitor arrivals into Fiji. Mr Ciobo also said that he would like to see a greater alignment of the current aid programmes with Fiji so common objectives were met.

Mr Kubuabola took the opportunity to discuss funding for the SPC and the importance of strengthening trade and travel connectivity within the region.

Mr Kubuabola later attended the commissioning of the Pacific Sea Level Monitoring Network Tide Gauge followed by a reception hosted by the Fijian Community in Niue.
