The deteriorating state of the old capital’s seawall will soon be history after Japan upped its financial support to Levuka Town Council on Wednesday.

The Japanese government has recognised the fast-approaching impacts of climate change on our shores, and has granted $224,000 through its Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme.

Levuka Town Council acting chief executive Azam Khan said: “This funding will assist in strengthening the side walls structure of the seawall to avoid erosion and also assist in water management.

“The council is stepping up its efforts to ensure its colonial heritage site is protected along with its inhabitants.”

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji Takuji Hanatani said Levuka Town was facing the threats of rising sea level because of climate change.

“This has placed an environmental strain on the town through erosion of its shoreline, loss of vegetation and even threatens its population, businesses and the UNESCO World Heritage sites,” Mr Hanatani said.

The Japan Embassy’s contact person, Peni Saurara confirmed that the funds are usually released within two to five days after the signing of the projects.
