Refrigerators Learn To Respect Environment

In order to be environmentally conscious, nine participants took part in a Good Practises in Refrigeration (GPR) training in Labasa.
The two-day training which ended yesterday was organised by the Department of Environment’s National Ozone Unit in collaboration with the Fiji National University (FNU).
Ozone Depleting Substances Inspector/GPR instructor Seru Ramakita said the training taught participants environmentally-friendly methods while handling refrigerators.
“We hold these training in the Western and Central Division twice a year, however, as a Look North Policy together with a few requests from the Labasa refrigeration sector, we are also focusing on the North,” Mr Ramakita said.
“GPR training teaches about the professional handling of refrigerators to minimise unnecessary impact of dangerous gases to the environment just because of bad workmanship.
“We would like these participants to help raise awareness in the North about the damaging of the upper ozone layer leading to climate change and rise in sea level through the mishandling of refrigerators.”
Mr Ramakita said the department would address a highly flammable hydro-carbon gas introduced in the domestic refrigerators market next year.
