Team PowerCat took out the three-day Fiji Classics Game Fishing tournament at Denarau yesterday.

And they have qualified to take part in the Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in April, 2016.

Led by James Thackeray from Sydney, Australia, together with Jono Ullvich, George Tvinlkev and Mark Sinclair, the team landed an impressive yellow fin weighing 71.6kg on the final day of competition.

Thackeray, 42, said this was his 12th trip to Fiji and his fourth Fiji Classics.

“This is one of the best catch I had in recent days,” he said.

“I caught it on a 37kg line one mile off the reef. But it was a great trip out there.”

They won the overall big boat category with 765.1 kg ahead of Lunasea (554.4kg) and Salsa 526.4kg.

Denarau Game and Sport Fishing Club president Mark Ellison was overwhelmed with the results.

“This is one of the biggest fishing competitions held in Fiji as compared to the past years. We are grateful that the competition has ended at a high note,” he said.

Ellison said the weather was a big plus for the gamefishers.

“The fine weather has been favorable to us making the three days competition a success.”

Ellison acknowledged the traditional sponsors DevCorp, McDonald’s, Port Denarau Marina, Namotu Island Resort and Blue Gas.

In the small boat category Tuinui (396kg) first ahead of Oktimokti (324.8kg) and Tangaroa 314kg.
